Quirky, (FKA Kluster, mophie™) is a community-driven, social product development firm. In addition to Quirky, the firm also manages the Kluster and NameThis decision support platforms. The company was founded as mophie™ in 2005 while founder Ben Kaufman attended high school on Long Island, then relocated to Burlington, VT when Ben began attending Champlain College. mophie developed and marketed value-added digital lifestyle accessories, then sold its product line to MStation in 2007.
The company then focused its efforts on developing Kluster, the community-driven product design and decision making software platform. This concept evolved out of mophie's efforts at MacWorld in January 2007 when the team opened up its design efforts to conference attendees: sourcing, vetting and prototyping three new product ideas for the iPod market in three days. Quirky was spun out of Kluster in March 2009, with the new entity focused on rapid development and marketing of community-designed consumer products. In November 2009, Quirky acquired Kluster, and continues forward in the market managing its Kluster, NameThis and Quirky product offerings.
Lee Bouyea, Managing Director of FreshTracks Capital, formerly sat on the Board of Directors for mophie™ and Kluster.
