The Green Mountain state isn't known for venture capital investment. Last quarter, VentureOne recorded exactly zero deals in Vermont. And according to Charlie Kireker's research, four deals account for 80 percent of the $225 million invested in Vermont over the last decade.

Kireker and his partner Cairn Cross believe that venture capitalists are overlooking companies worthy of investment. And evidently, so do Village Ventures, Middlebury College, and a slew of other institutional and individual investors. They've invested $20 million in Kireker and Cross' new venture capital fund, FreshTracks Capital, which is located in Middlebury, VT.
